About

Pierre Schaeffer was a French composer, theorist, and pioneer whose work founded musique concrète — an approach that transforms everyday sounds into musical material through recording and technical manipulation. Trained at the École Polytechnique, he worked in broadcasting and used the equipment of the then public service to develop previously unheard sonic experiments: reverse playback, speed variation, and tape splicing, techniques that underpin pieces such as Étude aux chemins de fer (1948).

In the 1940s and 1950s he promoted collectives and studios devoted to sound research, cofounding the Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète with Pierre Henry and taking advantage of technical resources that established the magnetophone in composition. He published A la recherche d'une musique concrète (1952) and, above all, the influential Traité des objets musicaux, a theoretical landmark on the status of musical sound.

His career was also connected to cultural initiatives of resistance and to interdisciplinary collaborations (theatre, radio, film). Overall, Schaeffer made a decisive contribution to electroacoustic music and to contemporary practices of sound manipulation, both in compositions and in theoretical reflections on the musical object.
