About

Pieter Jacobus Oud was a prominent Dutch politician and historian, initially affiliated with the Free Democratic League (VDB) and later a founder of both the Labour Party (PvdA) and the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Born into a middle-class family, he graduated in law and entered public administration early, serving as a tax official and later as a member of parliament, where he specialized in finance, military affairs and education.

As Minister of Finance in Hendrik Colijn’s government, he implemented strict budgetary measures during the economic crisis, proposing in 1935 the so-called Bezuigingswet, a package of cuts and reorganizations that provoked intense political controversy. In 1938 he left the House of Representatives to become mayor of Rotterdam.

As mayor, he faced the challenge of rebuilding the city centre after the German bombings in the Second World War; his conduct during the occupation drew criticism for alleged cooperation with collaborationist elements, although he was also subjected to public humiliations and briefly detained. After the war he devoted himself to writing works on parliamentary history and in 1963 was granted the honorary title of Minister of State, consolidating his legacy as a central figure in Dutch liberal politics and institutional thought.
