About

Prince of Baden Maximilian (Maximilian Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm) was a member of the German high nobility and a central political figure in the final days of the German Empire. He became heir to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1907 and was known before entering active politics for his humanitarian work with the Red Cross during the First World War, focusing on the welfare of prisoners of war and using his international connections to facilitate assistance.

In October 1918, as Germany stood on the brink of collapse, he was appointed Chancellor of the Empire and Minister‑President of Prussia. He led the constitutional transition that established a government responsible to the Reichstag, promoted negotiations for the armistice, and forced the resignation of Chief of the General Staff Erich Ludendorff, although these measures were insufficient to save the monarchy.

During the revolutionary events of November 1918, he announced the abdication of Emperor Wilhelm II and shortly thereafter resigned the chancellorship in favor of Friedrich Ebert. He later devoted himself to political and memoir writing, publishing works on peace and his recollections of the events that marked the end of the old regime.
