About
D. José Francisco Xavier de Bragança was the heir apparent to the Portuguese crown in the late 18th century, the eldest son of Queen D. Maria I and Prince consort D. Pedro III. Baptized with long dynastic names, he was given at birth the title Prince of Beira, becoming the first man to bear that designation, and later held the titles 8th Prince of Brazil and 14th Duke of Braganza.
Educated by tutors chosen by the royal family, D. José married his maternal aunt, Infanta Maria Francisca Benedita, in 1777. The marriage took place amid dynastic urgency following the death of King D. José I, which hastened his mother’s accession to the throne and confirmed José as heir.
The prince left no offspring — the marriage suffered two miscarriages — and he died prematurely of smallpox in 1788, aged 27. His burial in the Braganza Pantheon at São Vicente de Fora and his death had repercussions for the royal household’s stability, contributing to the deterioration of the queen’s mental state.
His memory endured symbolically: a fort built in colonial Brazil was named Real Forte Príncipe da Beira in his honor.
