About

Prince John of Wales, informally known as Johnny, was the youngest of the six children of King George V and Queen Mary of Teck. Born at the Sandringham estate, he was notable in childhood for health problems: from 1909 he was diagnosed with epilepsy and showed signs consistent with a developmental disability, possibly autism. These conditions strongly affected his upbringing and the way he lived.

As his seizures became more frequent, John was withdrawn from public life and began living in houses on the royal estate under the care of his governess and family, who gave him attention and affection. His seclusion became public only after his death in 1919, a fact that later prompted criticism of how the royal family handled health and privacy issues.

Despite the isolation, contemporary accounts indicate he received family affection and that, for part of his childhood, he took part in household routines and played with his siblings and local children. His early death ended a life marked by medical limitations and later sparked discussions about the treatment of vulnerable members of the royal family.
