About
Maria das Mercedes de Bourbon was Princess of Asturias and the presumptive heir to the Spanish throne from birth until her death. The eldest daughter of Alfonso XII and Maria Christina of Habsburg, her place in the line of succession was only temporarily displaced by the posthumous birth of her brother Alfonso XIII; nonetheless she remained a central figure of the royal family during her mother’s regency.
Raised at the Royal Palace of Madrid according to the standards for princesses of the time, she received an education oriented toward the arts and courtly etiquette, with emphasis on piety and obedience. She was described as a serious, reserved young woman, shaped by the austerity of palace life and by family travels through Europe.
In 1901 she married Prince Carlos of the Two Sicilies, a marriage that proved controversial because of her father‑in‑law’s Carlist ties and the opposition of liberal and republican factions. The union polarized public opinion and provoked protests and criticism that reflected broader political tensions in Spain at the turn of the nineteenth century.
The princess died in 1904 from complications of childbirth, leaving a legacy defined both by her status as heir and by the dynastic and political debates that surrounded her marriage and role within the Spanish monarchy.
