About

Irene Louise Marie Anne, Princess of Hesse and by Rhine, was a member of one of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe’s most interconnected dynasties. A granddaughter of Queen Victoria and daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse, she was best known as the consort of Prince Heinrich of Prussia, brother of Emperor Wilhelm II, and for a family life closely tied to the Russian and British courts.

Raised according to Victorian standards, Irene combined the formal duties of high nobility—representational work, philanthropy and traditional domestic education—with a private life marked by family tragedies: she was a carrier of hemophilia and saw two of her children afflicted by the disease, and she lost close relatives during World War I and the Russian Revolution. Her marriage to Heinrich was described as affectionate, and the couple were noted for their cordial relations with relatives.

Throughout her life she exercised discreet influence within European dynastic networks, intervening in marital arrangements and supporting kin through personal crises, as in the case of the tsarevich Alexei. She survived the political upheavals that shook European monarchies and died in 1953, remembered as the last surviving daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV and as a representative figure of the royal generations that connected Britain, Germany and Russia.
