About

Princess Therese of Saxe-Altenburg was by birth a member of the House of Saxe-Altenburg and, by marriage, a princess of Sweden and Norway with the title Duchess of Dalarna. A granddaughter of German princely families, she spent her childhood in Bavaria and later lived under the guardianship of high-ranking relatives, which shaped her education and social position in nineteenth-century northern Europe.

She married in 1864 Prince August, Duke of Dalarna; the marriage was described as amicable and without great romantic fervor, and produced no children. At the Swedish court she was known as Teresia and took part in official musical life, regularly attending meetings of the Royal Academy of Music.

Throughout her life she faced documented mental health problems and, after circumstantial scandals involving correspondence with controversial figures, spent periods receiving treatment abroad. Widowed from 1873, she later lived at Haga Palace and was remembered for her domestic privacy and the popular nickname “Duchess of Haga.”

She died in 1914, leaving a legacy chiefly defined by her courtly position, her cultural presence in Sweden, and a personal story that attracted public attention and controversy in her time.
