About

Luise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was a German princess of the house of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, known for her role in the delicate succession of the Ernestine duchies in the early 19th century. The daughter of Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, she became notable as the presumed heir to the duchy, placing her at the center of dynastic negotiations after the death of Duke Frederick IV.

She married in 1817 Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (later Saxe-Coburg-Gotha); the union produced two children and is ancestral to several European royal families. The marriage nevertheless failed due to the duke’s infidelities; Luise separated in 1824 and obtained a divorce in 1826. The succession dispute helped trigger the territorial reorganization that created the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

After the divorce she retained the title Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and entered a morganatic marriage, kept secret, with Louis Alexander of Hanstein, Count of Pölzig. Her private life and her role in the ducal succession defined her historical notoriety; she died in Paris in 1831.
