About

Amalia Maria da Glória Augusta, Princess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, was a prominent 19th-century member of the European nobility and the wife of Prince Henry of the Netherlands. Born into a lineage connected to several royal houses — the daughter of Prince Bernhard and Princess Ida of Saxe-Meiningen and a niece by marriage of British monarchs — her position helped reinforce dynastic ties between the courts of the period.

Married in 1853, she and her husband made their home at Walferdange Castle in Luxembourg, where she took an active role in social initiatives. Popular with the local population, Amalia supported numerous charitable organizations and was responsible for introducing the region’s first kindergartens, inspired by the educational ideas of Friedrich Fröbel.

Although she left no descendants, her social work and public memory were recognized after her death in 1872: she was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft, and in 1876 the city of Luxembourg erected a statue in her honor commemorating her work and popularity.
