About
Doña Fabiola de Mora y Aragón was Queen of the Belgians as the wife of King Baudouin, a role she held from 1960 to 1993. Born into an aristocratic Spanish family, she was known for a discreet, devout public image paired with a steady presence at official and cultural events; she was, for example, honorary president of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition.
Before her marriage she worked as a nurse in Madrid and published a collection of children’s stories. As queen consort she became known for social initiatives: she established secretariats and support funds, backed programs for the prevention and treatment of dyslexia, and founded the Queen Fabiola Fund for Mental Health, focused on mental health and the protection of vulnerable people.
Over the decades she concentrated on causes such as defending young victims of prostitution, combating human trafficking, and promoting conditions for rural women in developing countries, work that earned her humanitarian distinctions, including the FAO Ceres Medal in 2001.
After King Baudouin’s death she maintained a more private profile, remained involved in philanthropic activities, and continued to be a reference figure in Belgium until her death in 2014.
