About

Rajendra Prasad was one of the leading Indian figures of the twentieth century: a lawyer, educator, journalist and politician who rose to prominence during the independence movement and later became the first President of India, a position he held for two terms from 1950 to 1962. From the Bihar region, he joined the Indian National Congress, supported Mahatma Gandhi’s campaigns and spent time in prison during movements such as the Salt Satyagraha (1930) and Quit India (1942).

Before the presidency, he chaired the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Indian Constitution and served as Minister of Food and Agriculture immediately after independence. As head of state, he maintained a nonpartisan stance, promoted education policies and established presidential practices of neutrality that shaped the office.

Reelected in 1957, he became the only president to complete two full terms, serving for roughly twelve years. After leaving the presidency, he formally severed ties with the Congress and left guidance on parliamentary conduct that influenced later institutional practice.
