About

Ramana Maharishi, born Venkataraman Iyer, was an Indian Hindu sage recognized as a jivanmukta — a spiritually realized person. After a mystical experience in adolescence, he withdrew to the sacred hill of Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai, where he lived as a sannyasin for the rest of his life, attracting disciples and devotees who regarded him as a manifestation of Shiva.

His core teaching emphasized self-inquiry (“Who am I?”) as a direct method to dissolve ignorance and remain in self-awareness, complemented by practices of bhakti (devotion) and surrender to the self. In the ashram that grew around him, he offered upadesa — spiritual instruction — often through silence and by answering visitors’ questions.

From the 1930s his ideas began to spread in the West, influencing currents of comparative spirituality and self-knowledge practices. His legacy endures at the Tiruvannamalai ashram and among communities of devotees and scholars who continue to transmit his emphasis on inner presence and self-inquiry.
