About

Rebecca West, the pen name of Cecily (or Cicily) Isabel Fairfield, was an English writer, critic, and journalist whose work spanned the novel, the essay, and reportage. Known for her reviews in influential newspapers and magazines, she served as a literary critic for outlets such as The Times, The New Republic, and The New Yorker, and covered historic events including the Nuremberg trials.

Her best‑known work, Black Lamb and Grey Falcon (1941), is an extensive study of the history and culture of Yugoslavia; other notable works include the modernist novel The Return of the Soldier (1918) and reports such as A Train of Powder (1955). She also published essays and autobiographical volumes, including an autobiographical “Aubrey” trilogy.

Awarded and recognized in her lifetime, she received the CBE and was later appointed DBE for her work as a writer and critic; in 1947 Time magazine even ranked her among the world’s leading writers. Her work left an important legacy in twentieth‑century literary criticism and in studies of war, politics, and cultural identity.
