René de Obaldia was a French writer whose work spanned theater, poetry and novels, marked by a sardonic humor and surrealist touches. Born in China and raised in Paris, he studied at the Lycée Condorcet and had his youth interrupted by World War II—an experience that included imprisonment and forced labor, circumstances that echoed in the sensibility of his work.
In theater, he gained prominence with plays such as Le Cosmonaute agricole and Du vent dans les branches de sassafras, frequently staged and noted for satirizing social comedy and the myths of modernity. His bibliography also includes collections of poems, novels and various texts, showing a versatile literary practice maintained over decades.
Honored with national and cultural decorations—among them ranks in the Légion d’honneur and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres—Obaldia also served on literary councils and received international distinctions. His legacy lies in reinventing the dialogue between the absurd and social critique, which influenced generations of playwrights and poets.
