About

Richard Hell (Richard Meyers) is an American singer, songwriter, bassist and writer associated with the origins of punk. Active in the New York scene in the 1970s, he was a founding member of Television and later of Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, before forming his own band, Richard Hell & the Voidoids. With the Voidoids he released the influential album Blank Generation (1977), whose title and title track became anthems of the so-called “blank generation.”

Hell is often cited as one of the first artists to adopt an aesthetic punk stance — spiked hair, ripped clothes with rivets — helping shape the movement’s iconography that coalesced in the clubs of CBGB. His writing blends dark humor and youthful nostalgia, a trait evident in the lyrics that marked New York’s post‑1960s scene.

Beyond his musical career, Richard turned to writing: he published an autobiographical work and collections of poems and paintings in subsequent decades, returning to literary production after years focused on rock. His career remains referenced in the history of punk and in the construction of the subversive aesthetic that influenced later generations.
