Robert Laffont

About

Robert Laffont was a French publisher and businessman who founded in 1941 one of France’s leading publishing houses. A graduate of HEC with a past linked to the Compagnie générale transatlantique, he became known for introducing professional practices inspired by the United States—such as market research, advances to authors, and major launches—steering the French publishing industry toward the production of best-sellers.

Over his career he specialized in publishing popular fiction and high‑appeal foreign titles, acquiring rights to authors such as Graham Greene, Henry James, and J. D. Salinger. He created themed series—among them Pavillons for foreign literature, Ailleurs et Demain for science fiction, and Réponses for essays—that helped define his house’s identity.

Under his leadership the firm also launched the Bouquins series and expanded the group through acquisitions, including Éditions Seghers, Julliard, and NiL. Even after his house became part of larger groups at the end of the twentieth century, he continued to play a prominent role as honorary president. His legacy lies in the professionalization of French publishing and the widespread dissemination of popular and reference literature.
