About

Roger McGuinn is an American musician best known as the leader and vocalist of the band The Byrds. A central figure in 1960s folk rock, he became known for popularizing the sound of the Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar, which became his trademark and helped define the genre’s sound. With The Byrds he helped create hits that blended folk arrangements with British pop influences, earning the band critical acclaim and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

In addition to his work with the group, McGuinn maintained a solo career, releasing several albums and collaborating with artists such as Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Chris Hillman. His playing technique — including the so-called “jingle-jangle,” based on banjo-style fingerpicking adapted to the 12-string and a distinctive use of compression — influenced generations of guitarists and expanded the sonic possibilities of rock and psychedelic music.

As a performer and arranger, McGuinn also worked the folk circuit before achieving fame, performing as a studio musician and accompanist for prominent figures in the genre. His legacy lies both in the technical innovations he introduced and in his lasting influence on folk rock and later bands.
