About

Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier is a multifaceted figure best known for his career as a professional American football player and for his public work in the decades that followed. A 1.96 m defensive tackle, he was a standout at Penn State in both football and track before being drafted by the New York Giants, with whom he won the NFL championship in 1956 and earned Pro Bowl selections and multiple All‑Pro honors. Traded to the Los Angeles Rams, he became part of the legendary defensive line nicknamed the “Fearsome Foursome,” regarded as one of the most dominant in the sport’s history.

After 12 seasons in the league, Grier rebuilt his public career: he worked as a political bodyguard during the 1968 campaign, maintained a steady presence on television and in film with dozens of appearances, and took on roles as a singer, Protestant preacher, and motivational speaker. He was ordained as a minister in 1983 and founded an organization focused on serving urban youth.

Beyond his sporting and religious visibility, Grier drew attention for his artistic and cultural work — authoring a book on needlework and promoting handicrafts — and for his community involvement. His legacy combines high‑level athletic achievements with social engagement and a public reinvention beyond the playing field.
