About

Ruth Alston Brown was an American singer, songwriter and actress known as the “Queen of Rhythm & Blues.” In the late 1940s and early 1950s she became one of the most commercially successful Black artists, with hits such as “So Long” and “Teardrops From My Eyes,” which topped the R&B charts and established her importance in American popular music.

Signed by Lucky Millinder after being discovered in Detroit, Brown launched a prominent career at Atlantic Records and helped shape the transition from blues and rhythm & blues to the soul that emerged in later decades. Her repertoire and vocal style defined the aesthetic of early R&B and opened the way for later generations of Black female singers.

In subsequent years she broadened her work to include television and theatre; on Broadway she appeared in Black and Blue, a role that earned her a Tony, and her album Blues on Broadway won a Grammy. In 1993 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing her lasting contribution to American music.

Her career combined commercial success, awards and artistic influence, leaving a legacy as a central performer of 1950s R&B and a historical reference for blues and soul singers.
