About

Seymour Roger Cray was an electrical engineer, mathematician and computer architect recognized as one of the pioneers of supercomputing. Over decades he designed machines that led the world in performance and founded Cray Research, the company that brought those achievements to the high-performance market. His emphasis on system architecture — not only processor speed but I/O and overall organization — was decisive for the advance of scientific computing.

Cray rose to prominence in the 1950s–1970s with landmark designs such as the CDC 1604, CDC 6600 and CDC 7600, which set new standards of computational capability. He introduced innovations like peripheral processors to relieve the CPU of I/O tasks, solving problems that contemporaries faced at the time. His pragmatic approach and focus on raw performance influenced both industry and research centers that depended on intensive computation.

His career includes cofounding Control Data Corporation and, after managerial disagreements, creating Cray Research, where he continued cutting-edge projects. Cray is remembered for combining deep technical knowledge with an insistence on an engineering-oriented work environment — a legacy that shaped design practices in high-performance computing.
