About

Shirley Hardie Jackson was an American writer notable in the horror and mystery genres. Over a career of about twenty years she published six novels, short-story collections and memoirs, earning a reputation for narratives that exposed the dark side of everyday life and American community life.

Her short story "The Lottery" (1948), published in The New Yorker, became emblematic for depicting ritualized violence amid a bucolic setting, provoking intense public debate and establishing Jackson as a master of the unsettling tale. In 1959 she published The Haunting of Hill House, a work frequently cited among the best ghost stories ever written.

Beyond horror fiction, she wrote semi-autobiographical accounts of domestic and maternal life, collected in Life Among the Savages, which influenced the genre of humorous family memoirs in subsequent decades. She spent much of her adult life in North Bennington, Vermont, and her work influenced authors such as Stephen King and Neil Gaiman.

Private about her own biography, Jackson left a legacy defined by the ability to turn apparently ordinary routines and landscapes into sources of literary unease.
