About

Sirimavo Bandaranaike was a Sinhalese stateswoman who became the first woman in the world to serve as prime minister, leading her country in three terms (1960–1965, 1970–1977 and 1994–2000). Born into an aristocratic family, she initially devoted herself to social work focused on improving conditions for rural women and girls, before assuming the presidency of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party after her husband's assassination and formally entering politics.

As prime minister, she implemented sweeping economic and social reforms, including nationalizations in sectors such as banking, education, industry and the media, and changing the administrative language from English to Sinhala. Her policies aimed to build a socialist republic independent of the former colonial power, a process that culminated in the promulgation of the new 1972 constitution and the country's transformation into a republic.

Her government faced serious domestic challenges: high inflation, unemployment, dependence on imports and ethnic tensions between Sinhalese and Tamils, as well as coup attempts and insurgency. Internationally, she was prominent in the Non-Aligned Movement. Bandaranaike's political career left a lasting mark on Sri Lanka's institutions and opened the way for greater female participation in the country's politics.
