About

Smita Patil was an Indian film, theatre and television actress, recognized as one of the greatest performers in the history of Indian cinema. Over a little more than a decade she appeared in more than 80 films in Hindi and Marathi, noted for creating strong, independent and socially complex female characters.

Patil’s career was closely linked to the parallel cinema movement — the political, auteur-driven new wave that revitalized Indian film in the 1970s and 1980s. She worked with directors such as Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, and received two National Film Awards, state awards and a Filmfare, as well as the civilian honour Padma Shri in 1985.

Her body of work includes films cited by critics and audiences alike, such as Bhumika, Manthan, Chakra, Umbartha, Arth, Mandi and Bazaar, in which she often explored issues related to women’s condition, social class and urban cultural change. Alongside her artistic career, she was an activist on women’s issues, helping to bring visibility to gender concerns in Indian society.

Patil died prematurely in 1986; her work and legacy as an actress committed to challenging roles continue to influence contemporary Indian cinema.
