About
Stephan Eicher is a Swiss singer-songwriter whose career is notable for its linguistic versatility and a strong presence in European rock and chanson. He began in the 1980s with the hit “Eisbär,” recorded with the band Grauzone, and established himself as a solo artist with successful albums in France and Switzerland, including Engelberg (1991), which reached number one in Switzerland and features the well-known “Déjeuner en paix.”
Musically trained in Zurich and influenced by artists such as Patti Smith, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, Eicher developed a repertoire that blends French, German, English, Italian, Swiss German and Romansh, sometimes within the same song. From the late 1980s he entered a long collaboration with the writer Philippe Djian, who wrote much of his lyrics.
Across the decades he has undertaken European tours and worked with musicians such as Manu Katché and Pino Palladino, played major festivals and influenced peers who have recorded covers of his songs. His work achieved wide commercial and critical circulation, leaving a mark on contemporary Franco‑Swiss pop‑rock.
