Stephen F. Cohen

About

Stephen F. Cohen was one of the leading American scholars of Russian history and U.S.–Russia relations in the period following the Bolshevik Revolution. A professor at Princeton and later at New York University, he became known for academic books and critical essays that reinterpreted central figures and episodes of twentieth‑century Soviet history, notably his biography of Nikolai Bukharin, in which he argued that alternatives to Stalinism were historically plausible.

He contributed as an editor and columnist to influential publications and was publicly active in advocating dialogue between the West and Russia. A supporter of perestroika, he worked with Soviet reformers and maintained contact with leaders such as Mikhail Gorbachev, while also criticizing Western policies in the post‑Soviet period and pointing out mistakes made in the 1990s.

Recognized by both admirers and critics, Cohen played a central role in debates over interpreting Soviet and Russian behavior during the Cold War and after. His scholarship and public engagement influenced historians, journalists, and policymakers, leaving a legacy marked by a push for mutual understanding and a challenge to Manichean views of Russia.
