About

Steve Cochran (born Robert Alexander Cochran) was an American actor active in film, theater and television from the 1940s through the 1960s. He began in local theater and on Broadway before being signed by Samuel Goldwyn, who brought him to Hollywood; he became best known for antagonistic and “heavy” roles, appearing in notable films such as The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), White Heat (1949) and Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison (1951).

Throughout his career he moved between major studios (Goldwyn, Columbia, Warner Bros.) and independent productions, alternating memorable supporting parts with leading roles in film noir and westerns. He also maintained a regular presence on the new medium of 1950s television, guesting on anthology series and programs such as The Twilight Zone and Bonanza.

Beyond acting, he founded his own production company, Robert Alexander Productions, and on some projects he wrote, directed and produced, notably Tell Me in the Sunlight (1965). His personal life and relationships with actresses drew heavy press attention, contributing to a turbulent public image. Cochran died in 1965 at the age of 48, leaving a legacy as a frequent portrayer of villains and morally ambiguous characters in postwar Hollywood.
