Stu Sutcliffe

About

Stu Sutcliffe was a British painter and musician, best known for being the first bassist of the Beatles during the group’s early years. Trained at the Liverpool College of Art, he left the band to devote himself to painting, later studying at the Hamburg College of Art, where he earned praise from teachers and contemporaries for his skill and for works associated with abstract expressionism.

Within the music scene, Sutcliffe helped shape the Beatles’ visual identity and aesthetic, being credited with adopting the haircut that would become the group’s trademark and for taking part in the initial choice of a name inspired by The Crickets. His presence in the lineup has led to his being mentioned among the possible “fifth Beatles” in recollections of the period.

In Hamburg he met photographer Astrid Kirchherr, to whom he became engaged, and he continued to develop his artistic work. In April 1962 he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage that caused his death at age 21, ending a promising career in both music and the visual arts. His legacy remains tied to the intersection of art and pop culture in the Beatles’ early years.
