About

Theodor Eicke was an officer in the German army and a senior SS leader, a central figure in organizing and expanding the Nazi concentration camp system. As commander of Dachau (1933–1934) and the first Inspector of Concentration Camps, Eicke introduced strict disciplinary rules, standardized treatment of prisoners and guards, and procedures that became the model for other facilities. His reforms institutionalized a regime of systematic violence that combined severe punishments with a culture of absolute obedience.

Beyond his administrative role in the camps, Eicke took part directly in the regime’s political repression, including involvement in the execution of Ernst Röhm during the Night of the Long Knives. In 1939 he transferred to the SS’s military branch, taking command of the Totenkopf Division of the Waffen-SS, a unit deployed on the Western and Eastern Fronts during World War II.

Eicke died on 26 February 1943 when his plane was shot down near Kharkov. His legacy is tied to the creation and spread of state terror and repression practices, leaving a lasting mark on the structure of the camps and the regime’s security policies.
