About

Theodor Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian journalist, playwright and political activist recognized as the founder of modern political Zionism. Initially working in cultural journalism and literature in Vienna, he rose to international prominence while covering the Dreyfus affair in Paris; that experience convinced him of the transnational spread of antisemitism and prompted his turn to politics.

In 1895 he published Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State), a work proposing the creation of a national Jewish state as a response to persecution and laying the theoretical foundations of the Zionist movement. The following year he organized and presided over the First Zionist Congress in Basel (1897), where the World Zionist Organization was established and goals such as land acquisition, promotion of settlements and diplomatic negotiations were defined.

Herzl also worked as an intellectual and author of plays and novels, maintaining an active public role until his death in 1904. His legacy is the institutionalization of the Zionist project and the decisive influence on initiatives that, decades later, culminated in the creation of the State of Israel; his remains were transferred to Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
