About

Tristan Tzara, born Samuel/Samy Rosenstock, was a Romanian‑French poet and essayist and a central figure of Dadaism. In Zurich during World War I, he coordinated the circle that took a radical stance against bourgeois culture and traditional language, becoming one of the main organizers of the aesthetic‑revolutionary movement that sought to unsettle prevailing artistic values.

Under the pseudonym he adopted to protest the treatment of Jews in Romania, Tzara published provocative works such as The Gas Heart (1921), The Anti‑Head (1923), and The Approximate Man (1931), in which he advocated breaking with social and linguistic conventions. His activity in the 1920s also brought him into contact with artists such as André Breton, Philippe Soupault, and Louis Aragon.

With the decline of Dadaism he moved closer to Surrealism, joined the Communist Party, and took part in the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation. From the 1940s onward he produced poetry with a more lyrical and social tone, found in works such as The Escape (1947) and The Permitted Fruit (1958), reflecting ethical and human concerns that helped cement his legacy in European modernism.
