About

Walter Benjamin was a German-Jewish essayist, literary critic, translator and philosopher whose work spanned aesthetics, history and social theory. Positioned within the artistic avant‑gardes and influenced by Marxist currents and Jewish mysticism, he developed an original reflection on the cultural transformations of modernity, especially regarding techniques of reproduction and the emergence of cinema.

His oeuvre includes decisive texts such as “The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility,” “Theses on the Concept of History,” and the unfinished Paris, Capital of the Nineteenth Century, as well as important translations of Baudelaire and Proust. Benjamin examined topics such as the loss of an artwork’s “aura,” the relationship between technique and perception, and the political potential of new media to reshape popular access to culture.

Excluded from a formal university career, he worked mainly as a critic and translator, maintaining close exchanges with thinkers such as Gershom Scholem and Theodor Adorno. His work only achieved broad recognition posthumously and today influences debates in aesthetics, critical theory and media and modernity studies.
