About

Walter Booker was an American bassist known for his vocalized tone, use of glissandi and tremolo techniques, which made him a sensitive and versatile performer in modern jazz. Born in Texas and based in Washington, D.C. in his youth, he took up the bass while serving in the Army and quickly joined local scenes before settling in New York in 1964.

Over the course of his career he worked with central figures in jazz — including Donald Byrd, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz — and was a prominent member of Cannonball Adderley’s quintet from 1969 to 1975. His work included long tours with Shirley Horn and ongoing collaborations in subsequent decades with musicians such as Nat Adderley, Pharoah Sanders and Sarah Vaughan.

In addition to his activity as a sideman on numerous albums, Booker founded and ran the Boogie Woogie Studio in New York, a space that became a meeting point for international musicians. His legacy is tied both to his playing technique and to his role as a facilitator of creative encounters on the jazz scene until his death in 2006.
