About

Walter Mehring was a German writer and lyricist, a leading voice in cultural satire during the Weimar Republic. Part of the Berlin Dada circle, he wrote for influential journals and for the Dada Almanac, sharpening a critical stance toward conservative manners and the political order of his day. His songs and texts were staged in the most celebrated cabarets of the 1920s, where his irony and daring artistry found an audience and response.

When Nazism rose to power he was persecuted and forced into exile; his work endured the ostracism and continued to denounce totalitarianism from abroad. In 1944 one of his lyrics was set to music by Kurt Weill and presented on stage by Lotte Lenya, a testament to his ties with theatrical music and the European cabaret.

The author of novels, memoirs, and collections of poems and songs—among them accounts of cultural loss and exile—Mehring remains remembered as a chronicler of his era and as a touchstone of twentieth‑century German satirical writing. His output is still examined for how it intersects the avant‑garde, cabaret, and political critique.
