About

Wenche Foss was one of Norway’s most celebrated actresses of the 20th century, noted for her work in theatre, film and television. Trained as a performer and also a mezzo‑soprano, she became known for leading roles in both operetta and dramatic repertoire, and starred in productions on Oslo’s major stages, notably the Nationaltheatret, where she was a regular presence from the 1950s. Her breakthrough came with Carl Erik Soya’s play To tråder, which established her as a prominent leading actress.

Beyond her artistic career, Foss was active in social causes: a personal experience with a son born with Down syndrome raised her profile in advocacy for people with disabilities, and she founded support initiatives including a community centre in Alicante. On public issues she took clear stands in defense of LGBT rights and criticized the mixing of politics and religion.

Officially recognized, she received high honours — including the rank of Commander with Star of the Order of St. Olav — alongside theatrical awards and public tributes, such as a statue in front of the Nationaltheatret. Her death in 2011 prompted widespread national mourning and was marked by a state funeral.
