About

Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow was a German Romantic painter associated with the Nazarene movement and a central figure in the formation of the so‑called Düsseldorf School. The son of neoclassical sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, he received academic training in Berlin and deepened his studies in Rome, where he joined the Brothers of Saint Luke and embraced Catholicism as an expression of his artistic ideals. In Rome he concentrated chiefly on large religious compositions and took part in the decoration of the Palazzo Zuccaro (Villa Bartholdy), whose frescoes are now in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

Back in Germany, Schadow taught at the Prussian Academy of Arts and, from 1826, served as director of the Düsseldorf Academy. There he reworked the curriculum and established a program of sacred art that attracted students from across Europe and the United States, consolidating a pictorial school that emphasized spirituality, distinctive color, and respect for nature. Among his works are frescoes and religious paintings such as "Joseph in Prison" and the decoration of the Chapel of Saint Apollinaris.

Although his individual output is dominated by religious subjects and shows the influence of the early Italian and Flemish masters, Schadow’s most enduring legacy was institutional: the academy he led became an international reference and trained generations of artists who spread his ideal of liturgical art.
