About

William J. Bratton is a senior executive and former American law enforcement officer, known for leading some of the largest police departments in the United States. He served twice as New York City Police Commissioner (1994–1996 and 2014–2016), and was Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (2002–2009) and Police Commissioner of Boston (1993–1994). He is the only person to have led the police forces of the country’s two largest cities.

Bratton became known for implementing management and policing practices focused on controlling urban disorder, influenced by the so-called broken windows theory, and for introducing performance management systems such as CompStat. His policies have been linked to reductions in crime during the periods he led those departments, though they also provoked controversy over perverse incentives and allegations of misconduct.

In addition to executive posts, he worked as a consultant and adviser on public safety — including for the British government — and chaired boards related to U.S. homeland security. After his public-sector career, he led private initiatives in security technology and consulting.
