About

André Michelin was a French engineer and industrialist, known for cofounding in 1888 the company that would become Michelin, alongside his brother Édouard. When he took over the family firm, then focused on agricultural equipment and vulcanized rubber goods, André reorganized the business and brought his brother in to head administration, beginning an industrial shift centered on tire innovation.

From the late 1880s the brothers turned their attention to pneumatic tires for bicycles and, faced with the difficulty of roadside repairs, developed the concept of the detachable tire; Édouard patented that type of tire in 1891. That technical solution accelerated the adoption of inflatable tires and established the company’s position in the emerging mobility market.

Beyond industrial work, André launched the first Michelin Guide in 1900, an initiative to encourage automotive tourism and thereby expand demand for tires. The brothers’ legacy includes both the transformation of the tire industry and contributions to mobility and automotive tourism; they were posthumously honored with induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002.
