Annabella

About

French actress born Suzanne Georgette Charpentier, known by the stage name Annabella, she rose to prominence in European cinema from the 1920s through the 1950s. She first appeared on screen as a young actress in Abel Gance’s Napoléon and established herself with the arrival of sound film, achieving wide popularity with films such as Le Million (1931) and La Bandera (1935). Her performance in Veille d'armes earned her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at Venice (1936).

Signed by a major Hollywood studio, she appeared in international productions including Suez (1938), and maintained a stage career in New York, where she was praised for plays such as Jacobowsky and the Colonel (1944). During the Second World War she worked on productions in the United States while her family faced tragedies in Europe.

Married first to actors Jean Murat and later to Tyrone Power, her personal life affected her professional course; after her divorce and return to France she ended her film career in 1952 and made a final television appearance in 1954. She spent her later years in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle and died in 1996.
