About

Anton Grigorevich Rubinstein was a Russian pianist, composer, and conductor whose work in the nineteenth century played a decisive role in institutionalizing musical education in Russia. Born to a Jewish family in the region now known as Transnistria, he received a European musical education and kept contacts with figures such as Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and Meyerbeer, which influenced his classical, conservative style.

In 1859 he founded the Russian Musical Society and, in 1862, the Saint Petersburg Conservatory — the country’s first music school — where he served as director and teacher until 1867; among his pupils was Tchaikovsky. His institutional activity was motivated in part by his criticism of the musical nationalism represented by the group The Five.

As a composer he was prolific: he left operas, oratorios, six symphonies, five piano concertos, chamber music, and vocal works. Works such as the opera The Demon, Piano Concerto No. 4, and Symphony No. 2 (“The Ocean”) were among his successes in life, although they later fell into relative obscurity in the face of twentieth-century trends. His legacy combines pianistic virtuosity, a pedagogical vocation, and a commitment to the European tradition.
