About

Hedwig Maria Immakulata Michaela Ignatia was an archduchess of one branch of the House of Habsburg‑Tuscany. The daughter of Archduke Franz Salvator and Maria Valérie, she was a granddaughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth, holding a prominent position in Austro‑Hungarian aristocracy in the early twentieth century. She received the formal education customary for the nobility and in 1918 married Count Bernhard zu Stolberg‑Stolberg, with whom she had nine children, several of whom held public or ecclesiastical roles throughout the twentieth century.

As owner of the Kühtai hunting lodge, an inheritance from her mother, Hedwig was indirectly connected to the transformation of that property into a base for alpine tourism development after the war; family initiatives helped Kühtai evolve into what became Austria’s highest ski resort. She was honored as a Dame of the Order of the Starry Cross during the Austro‑Hungarian Empire.

She died in 1970 in Hall, Tyrol, and was buried in the family tomb. Her biography appears in studies of the Habsburgs and in the memoirs of Maria Valérie, and she remains a representative figure of the nobility’s transition from the imperial era to the new realities of the twentieth century.
