About

An Austrian archduke who shifted his career between the Central European empires and twentieth‑century Poland. The eldest son of Archduke Karl Stefan, he first distinguished himself as an officer in the Austro‑Hungarian army and, after World War I, adopted Polish citizenship, serving as a colonel and commander of artillery units during the Polish–Soviet War. He received the Cross of Valor and, in 1910, was invested in the Order of the Golden Fleece.

He managed the large Żywiec estate from 1933, joining the Polish landed aristocracy in a period of escalating tension between Germany and Poland. Following the Nazi invasion in 1939 he volunteered to fight again, but health problems prevented his mobilization. He was arrested by the Gestapo for refusing to declare himself German, enduring torture and prolonged detention that left him partially paralyzed and blind in one eye.

His family took an active role in the resistance: his wife translated intelligence for the Armia Krajowa and was decorated. After World War II the family property was not returned to him and was ultimately expropriated by the communist regime. Worsening health led him to seek treatment in Sweden, where he died in 1951, having recovered neither his property nor full rehabilitation.
