About

Claude Lévi-Strauss was one of the most influential anthropologists of the twentieth century and a principal architect of structuralism in the social sciences. Trained in philosophy, he began his academic career in Brazil in the 1930s, where he carried out fieldwork among indigenous peoples in the central region of the country — a decisive experience that inspired classic works such as Tristes Tropiques and underpinned his thesis Les Structures élémentaires de la parenté (1949).

As a professor, he held the chair of social anthropology at the Collège de France (1959–1982) and led major French scientific institutions, helping to internationalize ethnology. He published a large body of theoretical and essayistic work, including the tetralogy Mythologiques and writings that bridged anthropology, philosophy and cultural criticism.

Known for breaking with ethnocentric perspectives and defending a comparative reading of myths and social structures, his work influenced generations of sociologists, philosophers and anthropologists. He received numerous academic and critical honors, remained active as a writer and thinker into old age, and left a lasting legacy in the study of kinship, myth and cultural diversity.
