About

Dave Garroway was an American broadcaster whose career helped shape radio and morning television in the United States. Active in radio from the late 1930s, he became known as an announcer and organizer of musical programs, promoting jazz and experimenting with relaxed formats and live features. He earned recognition in Billboard polls as one of the country’s top disc jockeys.

On television he became a central figure presenting Garroway at Large and, most notably, as the first anchor of Today (1952–1961). His calm, conversational, and instructional manner—often punctuated by his trademark farewell, “Peace”—was cited as pioneering for the talk-show style, bringing viewers closer and softening the traditional tone of announcers.

He received honors for his work in radio and television, including stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Despite his public success, he suffered episodes of depression throughout his life. Garroway’s legacy lies in popularizing a more intimate, informative on-air style that influenced generations of morning and interview hosts.
