About

Dave DeBusschere was an American professional athlete best known as a basketball player who also had a stint in baseball. He played power forward in the NBA for the Detroit Pistons (1962–1968) and the New York Knicks (1968–1974), winning two championships with the Knicks in 1970 and 1973. Renowned for his physical defense and intensity, he was an eight-time All-Star and a six-time selection to the NBA All-Defensive First Team, finishing his career with averages of 16.1 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Before his basketball success, DeBusschere played professional baseball for the Chicago White Sox (1962–1963), becoming one of the few athletes to appear in both MLB and the NBA. He began as a player-coach with the Pistons, becoming the league’s youngest head coach at the time, and later established himself as a standout player after being traded to New York.

After retiring in 1974, he held executive and administrative roles: he served as commissioner of the ABA in the league’s final season, joined the Knicks’ front office in the 1980s, and took part in negotiations that led to the ABA–NBA merger. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983 and was named among the league’s greatest players in 1996 and again in 2021.
