About

Maximilian Joseph, Duke in Bavaria, was a member of the House of Wittelsbach and an important figure in Bavarian cultural life in the 19th century. He became notable both for his family ties — father of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, “Sissi” — and for his activities as a collector and traveler: he documented a trip to Egypt and Palestine in Wanderung nach dem Orient im Jahre 1838 and assembled antiquities that he placed in the family residence at Schloss Banz.

As a promoter of folk music, he helped popularize the zither in the court salons, to the point that the instrument acquired regional symbolic status and earned him the nickname “Zither-Maxl”; he composed and played it himself. His involvement also extended to preservation: in Jerusalem he funded the restoration of the Chapel of the Scourging on the Via Dolorosa.

Owner of Schloss Possenhofen from 1834, Maximilian Joseph left a cultural legacy through his collection and his support for Bavarian musical traditions. He died in Munich at seventy-nine and was buried in the family crypt at Tegernsee Abbey.
