Gary Gilmore

About

Gary Mark Gilmore became a notorious figure in the United States by insisting on the execution of the death sentences imposed for two murders he confessed to in Utah, becoming in 1977 the first person executed in the country after the Supreme Court revised capital punishment laws in 1976. His refusal to seek appeals and his decision to accept the sentence galvanized public debate over the death penalty and the legal procedures that govern it.

Born into a family marked by instability and conflict, Gilmore had a troubled childhood and adolescence, with frequent moves, early involvement in property crimes, and stints in correctional institutions. Despite showing intelligence and aptitudes, he left school and accumulated convictions that placed him on a prolonged criminal path.

The execution by firing squad and Gilmore’s combative persona inspired significant cultural and journalistic works, most notably Norman Mailer’s non‑fiction book The Executioner’s Song, and later film and television adaptations. His case remains cited in studies of crime, prisoners’ rights, and the media impact of capital sentences.
