About

Georg II, Duke of Saxe‑Meiningen, ruled that small German state from 1866 until his death in 1914. The son and successor of Bernhard II, he aligned with Prussia during the mid‑19th‑century conflicts, serving as a lieutenant‑general in the Prussian army and taking an active part in the Franco‑Prussian War, where he commanded Meiningen units and accompanied William I in Paris.

Besides his military career, Georg distinguished himself as a patron and reformer of the arts, best known for developing the Meiningen Ensemble. Drawing on his knowledge of history and art, he supervised sets, costumes and stage production, transforming the court theatre into an influential model for European theatre of the period.

His personal life included three marriages: to Charlotte Frederica of Prussia, with whom he had heirs; to Feodora of Hohenlohe‑Langenburg; and finally to Ellen Franz, an actress who became Baroness von Holdburg. The last marriage, morganatic, provoked controversy at court, but Ellen and Georg were much loved by the people and remained central to the duchy’s cultural life.

Georg II’s legacy blends military service with a lasting cultural contribution, leaving a mark on theatrical history and on the governance of the small state until the end of the regional monarchy.
