About

Serge Gainsbourg, stage name of Lucien Ginzburg, was one of the central figures of 20th-century French popular music. With a diverse artistic background—musician, composer, poet, painter and filmmaker—he became known for moving across genres such as jazz, rock, reggae, funk, disco and yé‑yé, imprinting them with a personal and provocative style. His compositions not only sustained his career as a performer but also became part of the repertoire of leading French singers and actors, including Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy and France Gall.

Beyond his musical output, Gainsbourg directed films and published literary works, broadening his presence in the arts and pop culture. His artistic career included deliberately scandalous and transgressive works that challenged conventions and expanded the song as an aesthetic and social form of expression. The controversial reggae version of the Marseillaise (Aux Armes et Cætera) and duets such as Initials B.B. illustrate both his impact and his propensity for creative provocation.

The son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, his childhood experiences during the Nazi occupation and his family legacy influenced recurring themes and images in his work. His fame—and his reputation as a self‑destructive bohemian—endured after his death, contributing to a lasting legacy: Gainsbourg is frequently cited as one of the greatest renovators of the French song, praised by critics, musicians and the public.
