About

Max Ernst was an artist born in Germany who became a central figure in Dada and, above all, Surrealism. Self-taught as a painter, he gravitated toward the European avant-gardes after World War I—an experience that deeply influenced his poetics—and contributed to technical innovations such as collage and frottage, as well as creating emblematic series (Loplop, Forest, petrified cities) that expanded the movement’s expressive means.

After working in Cologne with the Dada Group, he moved to Paris in 1922 and joined André Breton’s Surrealist circle, collaborating with poets and artists such as Paul Éluard and Jean Arp. His output spans painting, collage, printmaking, illustration and artist’s books; he also produced notable visual narratives and lithograph portfolios that influenced later generations.

Exiled in New York during World War II, he married Dorothea Tanning and later became a national of other countries before settling in France. Ernst’s legacy lies in his formal originality and his ability to combine experimental techniques with a dreamlike imagery that reshaped the limits of representation in the 20th century.
